SINGAPORE SUSPENDS FRUIT AND VEGETABLE IMPORT FROM HYOGO
SINGAPORE, April 4 (Bernama) -- Singapore's Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority
(AVA) will extend its suspension on the import of fruits and vegetables to
include Hyogo prefecture in Japan, with immediate effect.
This is due to the latest detection of radioactive contaminants in a sample
of cabbage imported from the Hyogo prefecture, the authority said in a
statement.
AVA has increased its surveillance of food imports from Japan since the
start of the incident at Fukushima Nuclear Plant to ensure that they are safe
for consumption.
To date, 488 samples of fruits and vegetables, seafood, meat, milk and milk
products imported from Japan have been tested for radioactive contamination.
According to the AVA, tests done on shipments imported on April 2 showed
that radioactive contaminants were found in the sample of vegetables.
Food imported from Japan that is available in the market is safe for
consumption, it said.
