Turkish parliament speaker asks proper representation of Turkey in parliamentary oversight of the EU Common Security and Defense Policy

BRUSSELS (A.A) - 04.04.2011 - Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin asked his European counterparts to help ensure proper representation of Turkey in parliamentary oversight of the Common Security and Defense Policy.
Sahin attended a conference of EU parliament speakers who gathered in Brussels to give a shape to European Security and Defense Assembly that is planned to replace the Western European Union.
Speaking at the two-day event, Sahin expressed Turkey's expectations from Europe about proper representation of Turkey in parliamentary oversight of the Common Security and Defense Policy.
Turkey, as an associate member of the Assembly of the Western European Union (WEU) that decided to abolish itself last June, had all rights except for right to vote.
"I must say that Turkey, with its extensive military and civilian capacity, has always made significant contributions to Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union," Sahin said. "We think that our functional position in the new structure should be equivalent to our status in the  Assembly of the WEU."
Sahin also asked a formula to secure full participation of EU candidate Turkey in the new structure to be established.
Turkey's expectations were supported by representatives of other candidate countries and Britain.
"Draft papers on the new structure offer observer status for EU candidate countries. We consider it necessary to find an agreement that this status gives us full right to take part in activities," Sahin added.
