M'SIA FIRST ISLAMIC NATION TO SUPPLY FROZEN HALAL BROILER CHICKEN TO OMAN
PUTRAJAYA, April 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will become the first Islamic nation to supply frozen halal broiler chicken to Oman, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop.
This followed the signing of a RM120 million (US$40 million) first phase contract to supply broiler chicken between local supplier, Mutiara Bernas (M) Sdn Bhd, and Global Food Solutions LLC based in Muscat, Oman.
The contract along with related developments are expected to generate foreign direct investments totalling RM100 million (US$33.33 million), he told reporters after witnessing the contract signing.
Nor Mohamed said Oman would also become the entry point to Gulf countries which previously imported meat chicken from South America and Europe, with oman alone buying some 76,000 metric tonnes a year.
Eighty per cent of Oman's food requirements are imported, he said.
Nor Mohamed said Gulf states comprising Oman, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait imported 1.2 million metric tonnes of frozen chicken a year to meet the consumption of their 42 million populace.
Under the first phase, Mutiara Bernas will supply 12 million broiler chickens a year. Supply will start in June.
Nor Mohamed hoped the supply contract would be the "turning point" for increased trading with the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) as intra-trade among OIC countries was still lacking, only around 10 percent.
"By far and large, OIC member states get their goods supply from third countries and they don't do direct trading," he said.
Asked whether the demand would be permanent following the Middle East crisis, Nor Mohamed said broiler chicken would be the alternative source for protein as the price of red meat had spiralled by 40 per cent as compared to 20 per cent of the chicken price.
Meanwhile, Global Food Solutions LLC chairman Ali Nasser Al Salmi said the subsequent phases of the contract would see import of other halal raw materials.
Given the huge Gulf market, sales are expected to touch between RM300 million (US$100 million) and RM500 million (US$166.66 million) a year during the 10-year contract period, he added.
Global Food Solutions LLC is a subsidiary of Muscat Bakery, Oman, a foodstuff distributor and the biggest retailer in that country.
The collaboration between Mutiara Bernas and Global Food Solutions LLC is on the platform provided by Yayasan Ekonomi Sejagat (YES) under the Halalan Toyyiban Supply Network programme, designed as an economic development model under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
