Malaysia`s Shoe Industry A Significant Contributor To Economy

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The local shoe-making industry has contributed significantly to the country's economy and become a leader in the Asean region for locally made high fashion footwear, said Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen.

She said the industry churned out a staggering RM600 million worth of export annually to Europe, Japan, Middle East and most Asean countries with another RM500 million (US$165.125 million) for the domestic market.

"The booming industry has also witnessed the emergence of successful footwear brands with strong capabilities in product development, distinctive style and superior craftsmanship," she said in her speech at the Glass Slipper Gala, here Wednesday.

Hosted by her ministry, the gala event at Chin Woo Stadium here was attended by over 500 guests including representatives from 13 international footwear associations.

Also present was Tourism Ambassador and world-renowned shoe designer Prof Dr Jimmy Choo.

The gala was to kick off the Malaysian International Shoe Festival (MISF) 2011, which will be opened Thursday at the Putra World Trade Center and open to commercial buyers and VIPs on April 7, and to the public from April 8 to 10.
