SCOPE OF HALAL CERTIFICATION SHOULD BE WIDENED

PUTRAJAYA, April 7 (Bernama) -- The scope of halal certification should be
expanded to cover non-food products such as logistics in view of the heightened
awareness among consumers on the use of halal products.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom said there
was already a detailed guideline on how to obtain halal certificates for the
food and pharmaceutical sectors but guidelines for other products had not
yet been explored.

"For instance, lubricant products. Someone has asked for a halal certificate
for the product because he wants to be able to handle it without any doubt," he
told reporters after opening a convention on recognised foreign halal
certification bodies, here Thursday.

He said the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), which
coordinates the halal certifications in the country, had been liaising with
numerous parties to come up with such guidelines.
