Southern Thailand Flood Costs Tourism Loss Of US$82.46 Million
BANGKOK (Bernama) -– The two-week flood in southern Thailand has taken a toll on the tourism industry with estimated revenue loss of 2.5 billion Baht (about RM250 million).
According to the Tourism Council of Thailand, tourists arrival have dropped by 30 per cent as road transportation, train, flight and ferry services were disrupted.
However, this short-term impact will not have an adverse effect on the whole tourism industry in the country in the long term.
Four provinces that are still flooded are Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phattalung, Surat Thani and Trang, according to the spokesman of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.
He said the flood situation in six provinces – Phangnga, Narathiwat, Satun, Chumphon, Songkhla and Krabi - was improving.
Nakhon Si Thammarat airport which was temporarily closed since last Monday, resumed operation yesterday while the south-bound train services from Bangkok ends at Chai Ya Station in Surat Thani and another stretch from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Sungai Golok.
The flood death toll has reached 58 with Nakhon Si Thammarat recording 25 deaths, Surat Thani (12), Krabi (10), Phattalung (five), Chumphon (three), Trang (two) and Phangnga (one).
