Urgent Need For Medical Supplies And Personnel In Libya

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The Malaysia Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia) has identified medical supplies and personnel as immediate needs in strife-torn Libya.

MERCY Malaysia president Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said the findings were made by its Rapid Assessment Team which was deployed to Libya last Saturday to gauge the humanitarian needs in the country.

He said the four-person team was led by Mercy Malaysia senior advisor Dr Paul Mettler. Mercy had been monitoring the situation in Libya since early March through their staff in Egypt, he added.

"Having a team in Libya will make it easier to respond to the needs (of the people) because planning, networking and procurement can be done directly from a neighbouring country if necessary," he said in a statement, here, Thursday.

Dr Ahmad Faizal said initially, the team's focus was on the displaced people, particulary those who fled to the border since Libya itself was not open to access.

"With the recent development and clear demarcation of control of areas, especially in the eastern part of the country, the United Nations (UN) agencies and non-governmental organisations are able to enter these locations and identify the needs more objectively."

However, he said, safety and security of the team were paramount and Mercy would observe all necessary protocols.

"We have also secured a commitment from the World Food Programme - UN's agency in charge of logistics in the area - to facilitate our team's movement," he added.
