PASSENGER TRAFFIC TO CROSS 60 MILLION MARK IN 2011, SAYS MAHB CHIEF

NEW DELHI, April 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is confident the total passenger traffic volume across the country's airports will breach the 60 million mark this year.

In 2010 all 39 airports nationwide handled a total of 57.8 million
passengers.

"This year, we are expecting an overall growth, of seven to eight percent.

"We believe we can exceed the 60 million mark this year. The airline industry has recovered and tourism is playing a very important role with lots of tourists coming to Malaysia," MAHB managing director, Bashir Ahmad told Bernama in Delhi.

With the global economy now showing signs of recovery, the airline industry that was badly bruised due to the 2008 economic recession, is on a strong growth trajectory again.

The International Airlines and Travel Association (IATA) has forecast a robust demand for air transport in the post recovery period, driven by emerging markets like China and India.

The IATA has pegged global passenger demand growth at 5.6 per cent this year.

Given these parameters, the MAHB is confident of surpassing the 70 million mark in 2014.

The national airports operator had targeted the 60-million mark for
passenger volume only in 2014, under its five-year business plan themed, "Runway To Success - Building A World-Class Airport Business 2010-2014".

"This year is a good one. Traffic has expanded and will continue to expand and we are increasing the capacity of our airports," Bashir said.

He was in Delhi to attend the 6th ACI (Airports Council International) Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, Conference and Exhibition.

Currently, about 60 airlines fly to Malaysia.
