Asean, Japan Eye Cooperation On Disaster Management

JAKARTA (Bernama) - Asean foreign ministers have expressed their determination to assist and support Japan and its people in their recovery and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the deadly earthquake and tsunami which struck the country last month.

They said Asean would reciprocate what they described as Japan's generous support to the development of the 10-member grouping of Southeast Asian nations all this while.

Their expression of sympathy and solidarity with the Japanese people was contained in a statement issued at the end of a special Asean-Japan ministerial meeting held at the Asean secretariat here Saturday.

The initiative was taken in response to the devastating impact of the quake and tsunami waves which hit Japan, as well as natural disasters that had occurred in other parts of the region.

The foreign ministers of Asean and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to promoting Asean-Japan future cooperation in disaster management, being cognizant of their geographical vulnerability to natural disasters.

The meeting also stressed on the need to further strengthen existing disaster management cooperation under various regional mechanisms.

The Asean ministers also requested association secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan to work closely with Asean member states with a view to assisting Japan's rehabilitation efforts in quake and tsunami-hit areas.

At the meeting, Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman conveyed to his Japanese counterpart, Takeaki Matsumoto, Malaysia's condolences and sympathy to the Japanese government and the people of Japan.

"The motion by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Parliament on this matter had been unanimously endorsed," he told the meeting.

He also informed the gathering that Malaysia had begun work to upgrade the United Nations' humanitarian response depot in Subang into a permanent facility.

Opened by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the meeting was chaired by Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr Marty Natalegawa.
