Malaysia Wants Philippines And Milf To Sign Peace Agreement Quickly
Yuri Azhar Mazlan
COTABATO CITY (Bernama) - The Philippines government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) need to find the best solution so that a peace settlement agreement that was supposed to have been signed in 2008, can proceed quickly.
Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad said the involvement of
the Malaysian Armed Forces led International Monitoring Team (IMT) in Mindanao since Dec 9, 2004 cannot be continued since the IMT is Malaysia's sixth involvement in the peace process.
"If no peace agreement is signed between the Philippines government and MILF, it will also have an impact on politics, social and relationship between the Philippines and Malaysia," he said.
Dr Abdul Latiff said he was confident that Mindanao would achieve peace just like in Sri Lanka when the civil war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan government which continued for many years ended.
"Both parties cannot use the IMT-Mindanao as an excuse to delay the peace process," he told reporters after a visit to the IMT-Mindanao headquarters to meet IMT-Mindanao chief Mej Gen Mahadi Yusof here Saturday.
Also present was Malaysia's Ambassador to the Philippines Dr Ibrahim Saad.

Dr Abdul Latiff's visit was part of his itinerary during his two-day visit to Mindanao, Philippines, starting Saturday.
After his visit Dr Abdul Latiff visited a MILF together with members of the IMT-Mindanao and Ibrahim to meet MILF chief Murad Ebrahim.
In his brief speech, MILF Chairman Murad Ebrahim said MILF appreciated Dr Abdul Latiff's visits which shows the sincerity of the Malaysian government in the pursuit of peace in Mindanao.
MILF will co-operate with Malaysia in order to achieve peace and order in Mindanao and thanked Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak and the Malaysian government for their role in the IMT in Mindanao, he said.
Dr Abdul Latiff later hosted a dinner for 150 Malaysians working and studying in Davos City, Philippines.
