KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Import duty of between two and 25 percent on food products such as groundnuts, sardines and fruit juice is to be abolished, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced Friday.

Tabling the 2009 Budget in the Lower House of Parliament, the prime
minister said the 5-25 percent import duty on fertilizers and pesticides were also scrapped.

He said import duty between 15-30 percent on food products such as coffee
paste, tomato sauce and monosodium glutamate be reduced to between 5-15 percent.

The government also proposed the 20 per cent import duty on port cranes be
reduced to five percent and between 15-30 percent on electrical goods such as
blenders, rice cookers and microwave ovens be reduced to between 5-20
percent.

In a measure to remove non-tariff barriers, the government proposed to
abolish import licence on port cranes such as gantry cranes, hydraulic loading
cranes, crawler cranes and heavy machines.
