Lıd 2011 To Adress New Challenges, Says M'sian FM

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama) - This year's Langkawi International Dialogue (LID 2011) is a timely opportunity for Malaysia and its partners in Africa and the Caribbean to address new challenges.

It is also an opportunity for the participants to re-visit their
priorities, re-evaluate their options and re-calibrate their strengths in the context of smart partnership, Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said at the launch of the official LID 2011 Portal at Wisma Putra (Foreign Ministry) here Tuesday.

He said LID 2011 takes place when the global arena was facing unprecedented political challenges and natural disasters.

"The pace of events which have taken place in the Middle East coupled with the natural disasters in New Zealand and Japan will no doubt have impact on the global economy.

"These developments will no doubt pose new challenges to the progress that we have made in this smart partnership dialogues since its inception in 1995. We therefore need to leverage on each other’s strengths to overcome these challenges," he said.

Malaysia will be hosting the LID for the ninth time this year. It will be held at Putrajaya International Convention Centre for three days from June 19 with some 25 leaders and 500 participants expected to attend.

Anifah said that for the first time, Malaysia would host the LID in
Putrajaya, instead of in Langkawi Island.

The reason was that during the last dialogue in Uganda, many had requested to see the development of Putrajaya, Malaysia's administrative capital.

“The change of venue will also enable the leaders and delegates to witness the progress and development that Malaysia have achieved in urban and socio-economic development especially in Klang Valley.

“This is inline with the objective of smart partnership which emphasises on the need of sharing and exchange of knowledge, technology and experiences for sustainable development,” he said.

Anifah also said Prime Minister Najib Razak had agreed that a Business Forum would be held one day prior to the LID 2011.

The theme of the forum, “Exploring New Dimensions”, would reflect the importance of developing economic and business relations between Malaysia and Africa with the current geopolitical developments.

At this year’s LID, Anifah said the leaders would also be briefed by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit on Malaysia’s concept of 1Malaysia which focuses of People First, Performance Now; Government Transformation Programme; Economic Transformation Programme; and the New Economic Model.

“The leaders will be able to listen and share their views and opinion on the 1Malaysia concept and transformation programmes.

“We strongly believe that new and innovative ideas on transformation and socio-economic policies will emerge from the LID 2011 for mutual benefit,” Anifah said.
