MERCY MALAYSIA RECEIVES RM1.2 MILLION TO SUSTAIN HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) Wednesday received a booster shot in the arm in the form of a RM1.2 million donation from Berjaya Corporation to sustain its humanitarian efforts. (US$1=RM3.03)
The money is meant for the Mercy Malaysia General Humanitarian Fund which was launched in 2003 to generate reserve funds for disasters, among others.
In a statement Wednesday, Mercy Malaysia president Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus acknowledged the need for sustainable funding and attributed the society's survival to the generosity of the Malaysian public and corporate sectors, alike.
"Mercy Malaysia is known for its work during emergency response to natural disasters and conflict situations, as recently highlighted with our response to Japan and Libya.
"But emergency response is not all that we do. We stay on and help, long after the disaster is forgotten," he said, adding that RM165,000 of the RM1.2 million donation would be spent to sustain preparedness programmes.
Dr Ahmad Faizal said part of the donation would also be channelled to on-going relief efforts and sustainable programmes at various countries where Mercy Malaysia operated.
