Pooling For 10th Sarawak Election Begins
KUCHING (Bernama) - Polling for the 10th Sarawak state
election began at 8am with 961,433 people eligible to vote in the 71 state
constituencies.
Postal voting for 18,363 voters had been carried out earlier.
Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is contesting for his seventh term,
led the Barisan Nasional candidates contesting in all the 71 seats.
The National Front (Malay: Barisan Nasional; commonly abbreviated as BN) is
a major political coalition in Malaysia. Formed in 1973 as the successor to the
Alliance it has been Malaysia's ruling political party since independence.
The opposition party DAP is contesting in 15 constituencies, Sarawak
National Party (Parti Kebangsaan Sarawak - SNAP) (26), People's Justice Party
(Parti Keadilan Rakyat - PKR) (49), Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) (5) and
Love Malaysia Party (Parti Cinta Malaysia - PCM) (6). A total of 41 candidates
are contesting as Independents.
There will be straight fights in 27 constituencies, three-cornered fights in
23 constituencies, 17 (four-cornered), two (five-cornered) while two
constituencies will face six-cornered fights.
BN held 63 of the 71 seats in the State Legislative Assembly previously
while the DAP held six seats, PKR (1) and PCM one seat, but then contesting as
Independent.
The voters will cast their ballots at 1,748 the polling centres throughout
the state which is the size of peninsular Malaysia and polling would be carried
out in stages as there were voters living in the interior areas.
Schools, longhouses and community halls were being used as polling centres.
The constituency with the largest number of voters is Pending (29,498
voters) while the least number of voters is in Ba'Kelalan (6,958).
Helicopters are being used in 15 voting centres.
Voting would be closed at 5pm but for areas far in the interior regions with
a small number of voters, the centres would be closed earlier.
The first result of the election was expected at about 8pm.
