Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan to Hold Tripartite Meeting Today

TEHRAN, April 16 (FNA)- Top officials and diplomats of Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan are due to attend a tripartite meeting in the Northwestern Iranian city of Orumiyeh on Saturday.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his Turkish and Azeri counterparts Ahmet Davutoglu and Elmar Mammadyarov agreed to hold the tripartite meeting a year ago and the preliminary meeting of the three diplomats was held four months ago on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) conference in Istanbul, Turkey.

The three neighbors are seeking to expand their economic, investment, border, transit and cultural cooperation, given their age-old and profound relations and their shared borders.

Iranian foreign minister arrived in the Northwestern city of Orumiyeh on Friday to prepare the necessary grounds for the meeting.

Upon arrival in the city, he underlined that expanding Iran's ties and cooperation with the neighboring states sets a top priority for Tehran.

Salehi said the neighboring countries play an essential role in Iran's economic and commercial transactions and this has been included as an important factor in Iranian government's planning.

He also voiced satisfaction with the "growing and remarkable" ties among Iran and the neighboring countries of Iraq, Turkey and Azerbaijan over recent years, and said, "The bonds are unbreakable and Iran's economic and commercial transactions with all countries are on the rise."

Iran and Turkey have in recent years increased their cooperation in all the various fields of economy, security, trade, education, energy and culture.

The two sides have exchanged several politico-economic delegations during the last few months.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul in a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani in February underlined the need for the removal of obstacles to the further expansion of bilateral economic ties with Iran in a bid to boost trade cooperation between the two countries.

"The level of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is not appropriate for the age-old ties of the two nations and we should remove the obstacles to the development of mutual cooperation between Iran and Turkey," Gul said at the time.

Also, Tehran and Baku have sought to expand their ties, specially in trade and economic fields, and signed several cooperation agreements in recent months.

The Azeri deputy prime minister who was in Tehran in March to attend the International Nowrouz Celebrations, said that Azerbaijan has always called for restoration of peace and stability to the region and favors expansion of all-out relations with Iran.
