Reference Book Aid To Help Children Of Single Mothers, Poor Parents

KLANG (Bernama) - A drop of knowledge is greater than an ocean of strength, so goes a saying from the Land of the Rising Sun.

It is probably with this in mind that the Selangor Community Welfare Centre has allocated 10,000 school refernce books for distribution to the local community in Klang.

Today, the centre -- under the patronage of Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Maglin Dennis D'Cruzit -- donated school reference books to 300 deserving recipients.

Four schoolgoing children of single mother Gan Poh Hong are among the 300 recipients.

The 36-year-old could not hide her excitement and appreciation over the donation for the children aged between four and 14.

It (donation of reference books) would definitely help ease her burden in providing proper education to her children, she said, adding she could ill-afford such books as her salary was just sufficient to ensure they had decent meals.

"I need to exercise thrift to feed my children. That's why, I am so grateful for the reference book aid because it will help my children in their studies," she told Bernama after attending the aid presentation ceremony at Menara Regensi here.

Gan's daughter, Joe Xze, 11, said she was happy to receive English and Mathematics reference books as they would help her get a good command in both subjects.

The Standard Five pupil of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Pui Ying in Kapar here, said the donation motivated her to study hard so that one day, she could take care of her mother and grandmother, Hoh Sei Jong, 63.

Housewife V. Saraswathy Devi, 36, was also grateful for the reference book aid received by her five children, aged between eight and 14.

"I am so grateful to the government for its concern over my children's education because the books will be very useful in their studies," she said.

Nasi lemak seller Haniza Ahmad, 36, said the reference book aid was a good initiative to encourage her children to study harder.

Meanwhile, Maglin told reporters that the centre had allocated 10,000 school reference books for distribution to the local community in Klang.

"We will continue giving book aid to other communities outside Klang and those in need of such help are welcome to fill in a form for that purpose.

"Through our discussion with several book publishers, they are also willing to sponsor more reference books. I hope this donation will ease the burden of parents in providing education for their children," he said.
