INTERNATIONAL FORUM IS THE BEST PLATFORM TO ENCOURAGE INNOVATION
From Ibnu Khusairi Ibnu Aris
LABUAN (Sabah, Malaysia), April 18 (Bernama) -- Discussions between various cultures among different countries is the best platform to encourage innovation and discoveries from all types of people in all aspects of life, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili.
Speaking at the launch of the Asean Youth Forum (AYFIC) 2011 on Creativity and Innovation at the Labuan Financial Park here Monday, he said innovation was applicable not just for scientific advancement, but for useful purposes of all types and need.
"The socialization process will encourage cross-pollination of ideas and should result in some outcome that would be truly useful and innovative.
"Such forums and discussions will encourage Malaysians to also participate in inventing new things and be more productive," he said.
Ongkili who launched the forum said Malaysians should be prepared to shift from being merely consumers, to a nation of innovators as this will result in massive benefits, including enjoying higher wages.
"This would be derived not only from capital inputs but also greater productivity due to the usage of higher skills and innovation, improved coordination, stronger branding and compliance with international standards and respect for intellectual rights," he said.
The forum, themed "Youth and Innovation as Agents of Change" is being held from Monday to Thursday, with 113 participants from 10 Asean countries including Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and China.
AYFIC is organized by the Malaysian Innovation Foundation (YIM), in
collaboration with the Malaysian Department of National Unity, in Labuan in East Malaysia state of Sabah.
The forum will focus on three aspects of innovation, namely Leadership and Innovation Tomorrow, Green Innovation and Social Innovation.
