MALAYSIA AIMS TO EXCEL IN INNOVATION
From Ibnu Khusairi Ibnu Aris
LABUAN (Sabah, Malaysia), April 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia aims to occupy the top position in Asean and be among the top 10 countries of the world in terms of innovation five years down the road, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili said Monday.
He said the target was achievable due to positive developments in research and development as well as facilities for positive innovation in the private sector in the country.
"We can achieve the target because we are making positive moves in terms of research and development and the number of innovations patented and commercialised," he told reporters after launching the Asean Youth Forum on Innovation and Creativity (AYFIC) 2011 at the Labuan Financial Park, here.
Ongkili said the high foreign investment in manufacturing would also contribute to raising Malaysia's position on the global innovation standing.
"Our efforts to instill the spirit of innovation in the people will also take us to the target because innovation encompasses all aspects and is not confined only to high-tech and large companies.
"We want the people to be creative thinkers and be able to come up with inventions based on all aspects of their daily life," he said.
Malaysia occupied the 25th position on the Global Innovation Index for 2008 and 2009 of the Institute of European Administration and Development (INSEAD).
