SENATE PRESIDENT MEETS VICTORIA LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PRESIDENT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Australia's Victoria Legislative
president Bruce Atkinson on Tuesday called on Senate president Abu Zahar
Ujang at his office in the Parliament building here.

According to officials, the visit was aimed at enhancing ties between
Australia and Malaysia, especially in parliamentary relations involving the two
countries.

Atkinson, 58, was first elected to the Victorian Parliament in 1992 as the
Member for the former Koonung Province, and was elected Member for Eastern
Metropolitan Region in Australia in 2006.

As president, he represents the Legislative Council in official dealings
with other parliaments, both domestic and international, and other
organisations, and assumes important ceremonial responsibilities.

During the hour-long visit, Atkinson and Abu Zahar also touched on the
political scenario in both countries, as well as social and economic issues.
