Turkey's foreign trade minister urges FTA with India

NEW DELHI (A.A) - 19.04.2011 - Turkish foreign trade minister has urged free trade agreement between Turkey and India to boost trade.
Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Caglayan, who is currently in India with an accompanying group of 150 businessmen, addressed on Tuesday the Turkey-India Business Forum in New Delhi.
Caglayan said Turkey could offer great opportunities for India's companies who are interested in investments in the region.
"If you want to expand in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Turkey would be your best partner, and the best jumping-off point for your business," Caglayan said.
On Turkish investments in India, Caglayan said India had plans for an infrastructure and superstructure investment of around 500 billion USD in coming years, adding that Turkish construction companies could undertake important part of those jobs.
"Nearly 75 percent of India lacks infrastructure and I believe that Turkish companies can fill this gap," he said.
Trade between Turkey and India grew eight folds over the past decade to reach 4 billion USD.
"This is not enough. We want to increase it," Caglayan said, however, he complained that 85 percent of the 4 billion USD trade was made up of India's exports to Turkey.
He said, "we need to make an adjustment."
