Malaysia China To Ink Mou To Recognise Degrees In Both Countries

NG CHE YEAN
BEIJING (Bernama) - Malaysia and China are to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to recognize academic degrees issued in both countries, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said here Tuesday.

The MoU will be inked during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Malaysia on April 27 and 28, he told Malaysian reporters after visiting the experimental high school attached to the Beijing Normal University here Tuesday.

It was reported that nearly 10,000 students from China are pursuing their studies in various fields of studies at higher learning institutions in Malaysia, and over 2,000 self-sponsored Malaysian students pursuing their education in China.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, arrived here yesterday for a week-long official visit to China, his first since becoming the Deputy Prime Minister.

Earlier Tuesday, Muhyiddin received a courtesy call from China's Education Minister Yuan Guiren and during their 30-minute meeting, discussed various education issues and efforts to improve bilateral ties, between both countries.

"We also exchanged our experience in education and certain qualities in Chinese education that can be emulated by Malaysia, especially in technical and vocational education," he said.

Muhyiddin said about 50 per cent of Chinese education was based on
vocational programmes.

"I think this is very good. It is sufficient to fulfill the demand for skilled workers in China. We should do the same in Malaysia, we know we need more quality human capital," he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said during the meeting, he and Yuan also tried to find ways to expand the cooperation in this field.

"We will look at the way they are implementing programmes and how they established ties and cooperation between academia and the industry," he said.

Muhyiddin said they had also discussed about sports in schools, information communication technology (ICT) and the possibility for both countries to hold high level meetings to enhance cooperation in education.
