Muhyiddin Explores Greater Economic Cooperation With China

BEIJING (Bernama) - Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has described his meeting with Chinese vice-premier Li Keqiang Tuesday as fruitful for it touched on greater economic, trade and investment cooperation Malaysia and China.
Muhyiddin said bilateral trade between both countries had increased seven folds to USD$45 billion (USD$1=RM3.02), which was once only USD$6 billion.
"So we have good prospect as we have agreed to expand our cooperation not only in traditional export markets but also new areas," he told the Malaysian media during his visit to the Experimental High School attached to the Beijing Normal University here Tuesday.
He said Keqiang had proposed both countries to widen their cooperation in the oil and gas, agriculture and green technology.
Cooperation will also be enhanced in the field of education as well as the safety of the Straits of Melaka, added Muhyiddin.
"We welcome the upcoming visit of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Kuala Lumpur this month, during which he will be signing the Comprehensive Economic Agreement, which is aimed at stimulating further economic ties between both countries," said Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin said he also proposed both countries to hold a bilateral
discussion to resolve problems related to the South China Sea and enhance cooperation on food security.
"We also discussed on regional issues and Malaysia's role in international affairs, including Asean+3, which involves China, South Korea and Japan," he added.
Meanwhile, speaking during his visit to the Experimental High School, Muhyiddin said he looked forward to the possibility of having various forms of cooperation between Malaysian sports schools and the Experimental High School, which excelled in sports as well as academic.
He said there were lesson to be learned from the Experimental High School as Malaysia had embarked on a nationwide initiative of the 1Student 1Sports programme.
"We believe that students participation in sports will enhance their learning ability and contribute to the process of developing wholesome individuals.
"Malaysia's National Education Philosophy expressly states that education is an on-going effort at developing the potential of human being in a holistic manner, so as to produce individuals, who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced.
"This, of course, necessitates active involvement of students in sports activities that will help develop their mental, emotional and physical abilities in a balanced manner," he said.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said he was keen on the
Experimental High School's curriculum development that integrates sports activities into academic programs in schools.
"Besides, we are also interested to initiate teacher capacity building programs with your school as a means to share expertise on integrated sports education," he said.
Muhyiddin hoped the collaboration would benefit students from both countries for in the process of learning from each other, it could forge mutual understanding and cooperation across cultures.
Muhyiddin, who arrived here Monday for a week-long official visit to China, is scheduled to visit Beijing Foreign Studies University.
