PRIORITISE HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT IN FACING GLOBALISATION - NOTHERN STATE RULER
ALOR SETAR (Kedah, Malaysia), April 20 (Bernama) -- Human capital
development should be made a priority in facing the effects of globalisation and open sky policy so that the negative influences could be checked, said the Sultan (Ruler) of northern state of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
The ruler said although free flow of information was a positive feature of globalisation, at the same time society should not neglect the fact that much of the imported information and entertainment material conflicted with Eastern values.
"We are also aware of the unhealthy culture or elements such as gambling and viewing pornography spreading among our young via information search through the Internet, and these are threatening the minds and values of our young," the Sultan said at the 41st Awards for Excellence Presentation Day of Keat Hwa National-Type Chinese Secondary School, here, Wednesday.
Tuanku Abdul Halim said parents in this era of globalisation should play a big role in disciplining their children in accessing the right information from the ICT explosion.
"Continuous monitoring is necessary ensure our children do not stray from the correct path. The family institution's role must be strengthened through the inculcation of moral and religious values among the young," said the Kedah ruler.
The Sultan said with strong resilience, an individual would be able to take advantage of the good and avoid the bad.
"I urge that everyone return to religious teachings and imbibe noble values to deal with the effects of globalisation.
"Quality individuals will be able bring a paradigm shift, and act wisely and effectively, besides having the capacity to differentiate between the good and bad," the Sultan added.
