LITTORAL STATES ABLE TO SAFEGUARD STRAITS OF MELAKA

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) -- Littoral nations along the Straits of Melaka are able to safeguard their respective territorial waters but welcome any assistance from the United States, said Armed Forces chief Azizan Ariffin.

He said Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore were able to safeguard the straits but any assistance from the US in terms of aid or assets would help enhance security along the 900km straits.

"Even without the help (from the US), we have been managing the security very well," he told reporters after closing the Straits of Melaka and Singapore Security Seminar 2011 here Wednesday.

The US has called on the littoral states to take appropriate actions within their respective territorial waters to ward off piracy and potential maritime terrorism to ensure the safety of some 50,000 cargo and oil tankers plying the straits yearly.
