ACADEMY TO TRAIN RETAIL WORKERS SET TO OPEN
KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- A retail academy to produce skill workers for the retail sector is set to be opened soon, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaacob.
He said the academy was set up by the ministry with the cooperation of the Cooperative College of Malaysia (MKM) is line with the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the New Economic Model.
"Under the ETP, the wholesale and retail sector is projected to contribute RM165 billion to the Gross National Income by 2010 and provides 370,000 new jobs in the next 10 years," he said at the MKM convocation here Thursday.

The wholesale and retail sector is among 12 National Key Economic Areas given emphasis under the cooperative movement besides financial services, health tourism, agriculture and agro-based industries.
Ismail Sabri said the objective of the academy was to provide formal and practical training to retail outlet employees whether they were owned by cooperatives or private operators.
He said currently three courses were identified for the academy by the MSM, namely mini market management, restaurant and catering Management, and tourism management.
Meanwhile, Ismail Sabri hoped more professionals should be given the opportunity to manage cooperatives to enhance public's trust in the movement.
"Now big cooperatives declare high dividend like Bank Rakyat 15 per cent, Bank Association 10 per cent, Felda Cooperative more than 10 per cent, so people can see that the cooperative movement has a future.
"Recently, when Bank Rakyat opened up RM1 billion new shares, many people want to buy them. Some people even questioned why the offer is limited to RM500 for new members. Previously, nobody wants to buy shares in the bank," he said.
At the convocation, 107 students received Diploma in Cooperative Management, Professional Diploma in Cooperative Auditing and Certificate in Cooperative Management, an increase of 123 per cent compared with last year.
