8.5 MILLION TREES PLANTED NATIONWIDE SO FAR

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 8.5 million trees have been planted so far under the campaign to plant 26 million trees by 2014, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Douglas Unggah Embas said Thursday.

He said the trees were planted nationwide, involving 9.6 million hectares of land, at a cost of RM11.27 million. (US$1=RM3.01)

The planting of the 26 million trees will be done in stages and will be monitored by the relevant department and agencies under the ministry, he said in reply to Senator Ahamat@Ahamad Yusop at the Senate sitting, here.

Ahamat had wanted to know the actual cost and size of land involved in the campaign themed "Green the Earth: One Citizen, One Tree", which was launched on April 22, last year.

The 26 million trees represent the estimated 26 million population of the country.

The types of trees planted included the "cengal", "pulai" "cempaka", "keruing" and "meranti".

When replying to Senator Akhbar Ali on why the contract to supply the saplings for the campaign was given to private companies, the minister said the trees were actually obtained by the private companies from the federal and stateforestry departments.

"The ministry also encourages the private companies entrusted with the project to get the saplings from other sources and as a corporate social responsibility, they are also encouraged to take care of the saplings, including in providing the fertilisers," he added.
