YOUNG READERS SHUN EXAGGERATED NEWS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 (Bernama) -- Young readers, especially university students, shun exaggerated news either in the mainstream or online media, said Deputy Minister of Higher Education Saifuddin Abdullah.

He said the "padded" news could erode public confidence on the credibility of the news organisation or media concerned.

"For example, an event is said to be attended by 20,000 people but actually only about 10,000 people turned up," he told reporters after attending a discourse organised by the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang near here Thursday.

Members of the panel were media advisor to information communication and culture minister Ibrahim Yahaya and Harakah chief editor Ahmad Lutfi Othman while Sayed Munawar Sayaed Mustar acted as moderator.

In another development, Saifuddin said the authorities should provide greater flexibility on write-up and should not impose too much restriction on articles written by academicians in the media.

Saifuddin said he had received a complaint from a lecturer, who was summoned by the authorities to clarify his article in a mainstream media which was deemed sensitive.

He said all quarters should respect differing views as long as they did pose a threat to national security.
