MOSTI-UNHAS R&D COLLABORATION IN MAKASSAR SUCCESSFUL

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), April 22 (Bernama) -- The collaboration between two agencies under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) and Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) to develop the natural vinegar industry as well as alternative liver treatments in Makassar, Indonesia have each been successful, said minister Dr Maximus Ongkili Thursday.

“The collaboration with UNHAS involving SIRIM Berhad and Technology Park Malaysia (TPM) is aimed at promoting the application from MOSTI technologies to bring about their commercialisation.

”It is also aimed at strengthening our bilateral ties through science, technology and innovation,” Ongkili said in a statement here.

He was at the launch and handing over of the projects held at the university in Makassar where TPM chairman Nasarudin Hashim, SIRIM chairman Jamaliah Kamis and UNHAS rector Prof Dr Idrus A Paturusi were present.

Ongkili noted that through the expertise and technologies of SIRIM and TPM, combined with research by UNHAS, the projects were able to develop industries using readily available resources from the area.

Both projects were carried out under the MOSTI-Ujung Padang collaboration forged during Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak’s visit there in November 2009, he added.

Ongkili said SIRIM’s technology was used to develop the natural vinegar industry for the Makassar community, while the TPM–UNHAS collaboration involved developing products using the Paliasa extract as an alternative treatment for liver ailments.
