PARENTS URGED TO BE AWARE OF ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS IN CHILDREN
KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- Parents have been urged not to take their children's complaints of joint pains lightly as they may suffer from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA).
Dr Tang Swee Ping, a consultant paediatric rheumatologist at Selayang Hospital, said that among the early symptoms of JIA were painful hand joints, joint inflammation, difficulties to walk and joint stiffness, especially in the morning.
"If such symptoms appear, parents should immediately bring their children to hospital for an initial check-up.
"For arthritis sufferers, they have abnormal joints resulting from
autoimmune diseases", he said at the launch of a treatment for JIA here Friday.
According to Dr Tang, JIA could affect children as young as 18 months of age irrespective of gender.
