Indian movie actor becomes 'youth envoy' of UN project

Chennai(PTI) - South Indian actor Virkram says
he is extremely happy for being selected as 'Youth Envoy' by
the United Nations for its human settlement programme
'UN Habitat'.
"I am extremely proud and grateful to have been chosen
from a long list of actors and sportsmen," he said here.
He said his main role would be to spread awareness
about the statutes of UN Habitat which include urban
stabilisation.
The award-winning actor would also be required to help
formulate plans for effective water management, slum
eradication and women and youth empowerment.
Under the banner of Vikram Foundation, a group formed
in his name, he and his fans had planted 100 saplings at the
YMCA in old Mahabalipuram road to commemorate the 'Earth Day'
on Friday.
He said this was part of his venture to plant one lakh
trees in an year in and around Chennai. Trees would be
planted in schools, colleges and jails also, the actor said
adding that another one of his projects is to identify and
rehabilitate school dropouts.
