Turkish-US Strategic Economic and Trade Cooperation Framework to convene soon, US Ambassador to Ankara says
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 25.04.2011 - The U.S. ambassador in Ankara said on Monday that there was a great interest both in the world and in the United States in investing and making trade in Turkey.
Ambassador Francis Ricciardone, currently in Istanbul to attend an event of the American Business Forum in Turkey (ABFT), responded to the questions of A.A correspondent.
Ricciardone said what should be done was to turn this interest to an actual trade and investment.
He said partnership between Turkey and the United States in strategic, political and defense level was exemplary.
Ricciardone said Turkey's influence should be considered in shaping the discussions in NATO regarding what should be done particularly in Libya. He pointed to close consultations between Turkey and the United States on the incidents in Libya, beyond NATO.
When asked, "what kind of a role do the incidents in the region force Turkey to assume and does this role correspond to strategic partnership," Ricciardone said Turkey and the United States have similar targets in general in strategic level, however, naturally the parties have sometimes different point of views.
Ricciardone said Turkey and the United States have common interests, noting the two countries share the same targets in strategic level, for example on the most sensitive issue, Iran.
Ricciardone said both Turkey and the United States did not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons, however agreed that it has the right to have peaceful nuclear energy in case it fulfilled necessary obligations.
Referring to economic relations between Turkey and the United States, Ricciardone said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Barack Obama decided to listen to the voice of Turkish and U.S. business world and formed the Strategic Economic and Trade Cooperation Framework. "We hope them to convene soon, may be in June," he said.
Ricciardone said they would be in an effort to remove obstacles in both sides in front of investment and trade, and listed intellectual property rights, transparency and implementation of agreements as issues causing problems for the U.S. companies in making investments in Turkey.
