Turkish premier and U.S. president hold phone conversation on developments in Libya
WASHINGTON (A.A) - 26.04.2011 - Turkey's prime minister and the U.S. president discussed the latest developments in Libya during a phone conversation on Monday.
A written statement from the White House said that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Barack Obama had talked on the phone to continue their consultations on developments in the Middle East.
"The President expressed appreciation for Turkey's ongoing humanitarian efforts in Libya and its participation in the NATO No-Fly Zone and Arms Embargo operations," the statement said.
The statement also said the two leaders had agreed that attacks against civilians in Libya must stop, moreover, Qaddafi must step down and depart the country permanently in order for there to be a lasting solution that reflected the will of the Libyan people.
"President Obama and Prime Minister Erdogan expressed their deep concern about the Syrian government's unacceptable use of violence against its own people," the White House also said.
"The leaders agreed that the Syrian government must end the use of violence now and promptly enact meaningful reforms that respect the democratic aspirations of Syrian citizens," the statement noted.
Commenting on relations between Turkey and Israel as well, Obama said he hoped the two countries would find opportunities to improve their relations in the interest of regional stability, the statement added.
