Iranian Barber Accused Of Drug Trafficking Acquitted
SHAH ALAM (Bernama) - An Iranian barber was acquitted
and discharged Tuesday by the High Court of trafficking in 1.8kg of syabu at the
KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang last year.
Judge Abdul Alim Abdullah made the decision after the accused, Alireza
Shahidi Houshang, 27, managed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution's
case.
Alireza was charged with trafficking 1.795kg of syabu at the Inspection
Counter A in the Arrival Hall of the KLIA at about 11.45pm on Feb 1, 2010.
The charge, under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries
the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
DPP Nurul Husni of the Royal Malaysian Customs appeared for the prosecution
while Alireza was represented by lawyer Mohd Irwan Mohd Mubarak.
The prosecution called 10 witnesses while the defence called two.
Alireza, when approached by reporters, said he just wanted to return to
Iran.
