Laos, Russia enhance ties

VIENTIANE ,APRIL KPL) - The delegation of foreign affairs of Laos and Russia held a bilateral meeting in Vientiane on Tuesday in coincidence with the visit to Laos by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Mr. Aleksey N.Borodavkin between 26-27 April.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hiem Phommachanh, and his Russian counterpart Mr. Aleksey N.Borodavkin led the delegations of Laos and Russia respectively in the bilateral meeting.
The Russian Deputy Minister aimed his visit to Laos at enhancing the long-standing traditional relations and cooperation between Laos and Russia and especially between their Ministries of Foreign Affairs.
At the meeting, both sides informed each other of the political affairs and socio-economic development in their respective countries and highly valued the relations and cooperation between Laos and Russia over the past decades.
Both sides realized that the visit exchange by government officials between the two countries had been increased and their cooperation on trade, investment and tourism had developed. Both sides agreed to exert greater effort in tapping the potentials in their respective countries to ensure the effective enhancement of their cooperation on economic area, trade, telecommunication, education, culture and investment especially in mining and hydropower.
The Lao side appreciated the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Lao-Russian diplomatic relations in 2010 with various meaningful activities and the growth in all areas of the Federation of Russia and its materialization of strategic modernization plan as well as its increasing role in regional and international arenas.
Mr. Borodavkin appreciated the achievements the Lao government has made in the last 35 years, mainly its political stability, peace, social orderliness and its achievement in organizing the 9th Party Congress in March and approval of the 7th five-year socio-economic development plan by the government that is designed to achieve an instant economic growth and the poverty reduction of people and the fulfillment of the millennium development goals by 2015 as well as the graduation of the country from the United Nations’ list of least developed countries by 2020.
They also discussed content preparation for agreements both side are going to sign in the future to enhance their cooperation.
Besides to exchanging points of view on the internal affairs in their respective countries, both sides shared common interests on international and regional issues. On the same day, the Russian delegation also paid a courtesy visit to Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith and Minister to Presidential Office Phongsavath Boupha.
