Lufthansa passenger numbers between Turkey and Germany up 6 pct

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 28.04.2011 - German airline Lufthansa increased the number of passengers between Turkey and Germany 6 percent in the first four months of this year when compared with the same period a year earlier, company's top executive in Turkey said on Thursday.
Lufthansa carried a total of 1 million passengers between the two countries last year, Gregor Wende told a press briefing on Lufthansa operations in Turkey.
German carrier plans 11 percent rise in the number of passengers by the end of 2011.
Lufthansa carries out 74 flights a week between Turkey and Germany. This frequency makes the airline top company which operates flights from Europe to Turkey.
Wende said Lufthansa flights from Germany to Turkey are at full capacity, adding that the company wants to increase the number of flights to Turkey, especially to Istanbul.
Wende also said that the turmoil in Middle East and North African countries caused a shift in destinations, particularly to Turkey.
Turkey may see a boom in tourist numbers thanks to this shift because holiday plans have changed to Turkey from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Libya to Turkey, Wende added.
