AMBASSADOR URGES M'SIAN STUDENTS TO APPRECIATE MEANING OF MERDEKA
AMMAN, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Having witnessed the effects of war in Iraq, Merdeka (Independence) has a profound meaning for Malaysian Ambassador to Jordan, Hasnudin Hamzah.
He urged Malaysian students studying in the country which borders Iraq, to really understand the meaning of Independence.
He said they should appreciate those who had fought for the country's
independence from colonialisation.
"Use knowledge obtained to fulfill the country's aspirations to ensure that the country's sovereignty, freedom, harmony and prosperity will always be preserved," said Hasnudin, who is also commissioned in Iraq.
He said this to the 250 Malaysian students, including new ones who had
arrived in Jordan a few days earlier, during the 51st Independence celebrations at the Malaysian Students Department office here on Saturday.
The celebration was made merrier with the raising of the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) followed by singing of Malaysia's national anthem 'Negaraku' as well as the Independence Day theme song 'Perpaduan Teras Kejayaaan' (Unity the Basis of Success).
The Independence Day celebration was held on Sunday at the Malaysian
Embassy, here, and included performances such as nasyid (religious songs), Independence Day poems recitation and screening of films about the fight for independence.
Around 200 guests were present including a representative for the
Jordanian government, Culture Minister Nancy Bakir, foreign ambassadors, United Nations representatives in Jordan, senior officers from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Malaysians in Jordan as well as Iraqi and Jordanian businessmen.
Malaysian delicacies served at the function were beef and chicken satay, rice cubes, fried noodles, roti jala (lacy pancakes with chicken curry as well as various typical Malaysian cakes such as kuih lapis (layered cakes), pulut serimuka (glutinuous rice with custard topping), curry puffs, spring rolls and stuffed glutinuous rice.
