Indian Water Resources Secretary visits Laos

VIENTIANE,APRIL (KPL) - Ministry of Water Resources of India Secretary, Mr. Dhruv Vijai Singh, visited Laos from April 22-25, 2011. He called on Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Soulivong Dalavong; Minister to Prime Minister’s Office and Head of Water Resources and Environment Administration, Mrs. Khempheng Pholsena and Governor of Luang Prabang, Khampheng Xaysompheng.
He also met Minister to Prime Minister’s Office, Prof. Dr. Bountiem Phissamay, who is also President of National Authority for Science and Technology and President of Lao-India Friendship Association, and Minister of Finance, Mr. Somdy Douangdy. Director General, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry’s Department of Irrigation, Mr. Khamkhad Souriphoumy called on the Indian Secretary.
On April 23, 2011, as part of events commemorating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and the Lao PDR, Mr. Dhruv Vijai Singh headed the Indian delegation and Prof. Dr. Bountiem Phissamay, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, President of the National Authority for Science and Technology and President of the Lao-India Friendship Association headed the Lao delegation for a visit to the US$ 11 million Government of India-aided Nam Song hydropower project. Others joining this visit included Mr. Somboun Ratsasombath, Vice Minister of Energy and Mines and Dr. Khamphay Rasmy, Vice-President of the Lao-India Friendship Association.
To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, India and the Lao PDR have intensified exchanges, and will commemorate the anniversary with a range of activities between February 2011 and February 2012.
The visit to the Nam Song project was a key event in the calendar of the 55th anniversary, and is a mark of the importance that the two sides attach to a diversified relationship, of which development cooperation is the centre-piece. To mark the 55th anniversary a range of events have been planned over the next year, including, but not confined to cultural performances, lectures, seminars, film festivals and visits.
