Meeting to mark 50 years of Laos-China diplomatic relations held in Bolikhamsay
VIENTIANE,APRIL (KPL) - A get together was held on 25 April in the central province of Bolikhamsay to mark the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Laos and the People’s Republic of China.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Pan Noimany, member of the Party Central Committee and Governor of Bolikhamsay province highlighted the achievements and efforts made by Laos and China in the past 50 years in strengthening the friendship relation and co-operation of the two neighbouring countries.
In past decades, bilateral relations between the two countries were tested by several difficult periods, including the Lao people’s struggle for national liberation.
The comprehensive bilateral cooperation between the two countries covers national defence, security, agriculture, justice, education, information and culture, health, sports and other fields.
In particular, each year the government of China provides 300 scholarships to Lao students. Through this help, thousands of Lao students have graduated from universities in China.
In 1997, Laos and China established a joint commission in charge of cooperation in trade and economics, which has led to fruitful economic relations.
At present, China ranks as the second highest foreign investor in Laos. Trade volume between Laos and China has increased from US$130 million in 2005 to over US$1 billion today.
Both sides have maintained regular contact through exchange visits by high ranking
officials.
In 1989, then Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Kaysone Phomvihane paid an official visit to China. This was followed by a visit by the Chinese prime minister to Laos in 1990.
