World's oldest captive orangutan dies at Tokyo's Tama Zoo
TOKYO, April 30 Kyodo -
The world's oldest orangutan in captivity, named Molly, died Saturday of old age at Tama Zoological Park in suburban Tokyo, the zoo said. Her estimated age was 59 years and four months.
She was the first orangutan in postwar Japan when she arrived at Ueno Zoological Gardens, another Tokyo zoo, in 1955 from Indonesia at age 3, and became popular as an artist after she began drawing with crayons in 2002.
Her condition deteriorated in late March, said Tama Zoo, which has kept her since 2005.
With her death, another orangutan at the zoo, named Gypsy, became the world's oldest with her age estimated at 57 years and four months, it said.
