MALAYSIA'S ARMY CHIEF INDUCTED INTO NDU INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS HALL OF FAME
By Salmy Hashim
WASHINGTON, May 1 (Bernama) -- Gen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, Malaysia's 23rd Chief of Army, has been inducted into the National Defence University (NDU) prestigious International Fellows Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding
military achievement in the Malaysian armed forces.
Zulkifeli, who graduated from the NDU in 2001 with a Master's Degree in National Resource Management, received his certificate and plaque from Vice Admiral Ann Rondeau, President of NDU, on Thursday at the university's Eisenhower Hall, at Fort McNair, here.
Two other NDU graduates who were also recognised were the United Arab Emirates Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al Otaiba, and the late Maj Gen Gordan Cacic (1961-2008), State Secretary of the Croatian Ministry of Defence.
The inductees' photographs and names will be displayed in the International Fellows Hall of Fame, which was established on May 1, 2000. The first Malaysian to be inducted, 10 years ago, was Gen Ismail Hassan, then Malaysia's Chief of Army.
While here, Zulkifeli took the opportunity to call on his US counterpart, Chief of Staff of the US Army Gen Martin E. Dempsey, at the Pentagon where the two discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen military-to-military relations, military training in US war colleges, and defence cooperation.
Zulkifeli said he was honoured to be the first foreign counterpart to meet with Dempsey since the latter's appointment as the 37th chief of staff of the US Army on April 11.
Zulkifeli left for Hartford, Connecticut, Saturday where he will visit Colt Defense LLC headquarters. The company designs, develops, and manufactures small arms and weapons systems for US law enforcement agencies and the military.
Malaysian Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced in March a RM700-million (US$231-million) deal with the US to purchase 130,000 new weapons for the armed forces and police.
The purchase includes the 5.56mm Colt M4 carbine manufactured by Colt Defence LLC, which can accommodate the M203 grenade launcher, to replace the Austrian-made Steyr AUG assault rifle.
Malaysian arms manufacturer SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd (SMEO), which began local production of the Austrian-made Steyr AUG assault rifle in 1991, had in 2007 undertaken a deal with Colt Defence LLC to initially acquire 14,000 Colt M4 carbines, which can accommodate the M203 grenade launcher. They were all delivered by June 2008.
The company followed it up with a second contract with the same firm in February this year for the supply of 116,000 carbines over a seven-year period, pending approval from the US Congress.
Once the technology transfer comes into effect, Malaysia would be given the rights to market the locally produced carbines to Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Indonesia and other countries using them.
Prior to Washington, Zulkifeli was in Hawaii where he called on Lt Gen Francis J. Wiercinski, Commanding General US Army, Pacific (USARPAC) in Hawaii, and they held discussions on bilateral programmes and joint military exercises.
