MALAYSIAN EMBASSY IN IRAQ TO REOPEN IN 3 MONTHS

PUTRAJAYA, May 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian embassy in Iraq will reopen in three months' time after the documentation process has been completed.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said the decision to reopen the embassy in Baghdad, the Iraqi capital, was agreed upon by the Cabinet recently.

He said the move was also made because many countries including a number of Asean countries, Japan, South Korea and China had reopened their embassies there.

"We are making plans. One of the aspects taken into consideration (before reopening the Malaysian embassy) is security.

"The Iraqi government also wants Malaysia to reopen its embassy (in Baghdad) as soon as possible," Anifah told reporters after the ministry's monthly assembly, here, Tuesday.

Kuala Lumpur had in March 2003, decided to close the Malaysian embassy in Baghdad due to the turbulence in Iraq.

On another development, Anifah said Kuala Lumpur would continue to cooperate with other countries in the fight against terrorism as it was a global problem.

Meanwhile, he wants all officers and staff at Wisma Putra to improve their expertise and knowledge as this would give a good image of Malaysia to the world.
