MALAYSIA TO SUBMIT BID TO HOST GLOBAL SUMMIT OF WOMEN 2013
From Zuriati Zulmi
ISTANBUL, May 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will submit a bid to host the Global Summit of Women 2013 following the 2012 edition in Athens.
The Malaysian prime minister's wife, Rosmah Mansor, said the country would
have no problem hosting the event as it had all the necessary facilities as well
as policies recognising the role of women in the country's development,
including in the area of entrepreneurship.
"I was made to understand that we'll be bidding to host the summit in 2013
by SME Corp chief executive officer Datuk Hafsah Hashim. I'm fully supportive of
the proposed bid," she told Malaysian journalists covering her visit to Turkey
for the Global Summit of Women 2011, on Thursday.
She said that many delegates at the Istanbul meeting had signalled their
support over Malaysia's intention.
"Those who haven't been to Malaysia as well as those who have, have said
that they like Malaysia and will support Malaysia," she said.
Rosmah said Malaysia had its own unique strengths to host the event in two
years' time.
She also counted Malaysia's convention centres, top-notch accommodation
facilities and good transport system as plus points that should work in its
favour.
Rosmah said the relevant Malaysian ministries, including Tourism Ministry,
had the ability to organise various carnivals in conjunction with the event.
On the policy front, she said, the government encouraged women to be
successful in all fields, including professional, business and education.
"In my opinion, we have all the ingredients to host the summit in 2013,"
she said.
Earlier, in her speech at the ministerial roundtable, Rosmah said that
in the era of globalisation, women entrepreneurs should aspire to break
geographical barriers and uncover new opportunities in the business world.
"Women thus have no alternative but to strive harder to form stronger,
broader and robust network to elevate their standing in the international
arena," she said.
"Women have as much stake as men in shaping the course of the world. Our
strength is each other, and we must stand united as one," she added.
