MALAYSIA FIRM TO END DOHA ROUND TALKS BY YEAR-END, SAYS MUSTAPA

By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
JAKARTA, May 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and the 27-member European Union are
steadfast in their resolve to end the Doha Round trade negotiations by year-end,
says International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed.

Mustapa stressed this when he met EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht here
Thursday in efforts to reinvigorate world economic growth.

"We remain steadfast in our resolve (to conlude the negotiations) as we've
spent a lot of time and money. We feel it's important to conclude the talks
because by reaching an agreement, we can bolster world economic growth.

"What's important is that we need sources to fuel world economic growth,"
he told Malaysian journalists on the sidelines of the Asean-EU Business Summit
at the Jakarta Convention Centre here today.

At the meeting with De Gucht, Mustapa said they exchanged views on the
progress of the Doha Round negotiations and he took the opportunity to state
that Malaysia was committed to see the negotiations were amicably concluded by
year-end.

"I am among the 20 trade ministers who signed a letter distributed to 153
members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) stating our stand that we are
determined to work seriously to ensure that the Doha Round trade negotiations be
finalised by end of this yearm" he said.

Mustapa said currently there was still specific divide between major
trading nations like the United States, Brazil and India.

In Geneva, World Trade Organisation director-general Pascal Lamy had adopted
several methods and procedures to expedite negotiations and the EU had also
played its role to find ways on how to reach a compromise with advanced nations.

"There are still unresolved issues, particularly between world's major
trading nations, and this is very important and a crucial obstacle," he said.

Against the sluggish and uncertain global economic landscape, an agreement
reached in Doha Round trade negotiations would give confidence to improve the
world economic scenario.

"If the Doha Round is successfully concluded, it will provide the
much-needed boost to revitalise world economic growth," he added.
