THAI PM SEEKS HOUSE DISSOLUTION
By Jamaluddin Muhammad
BANGKOK, May 6 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will submit a royal decree to the palace this afternoon to seek consent for dissolving Parliament to pave the way for a general election.
Abhisit said the submission would be done before he leaves for Jakarta to attend the Asean Summit.
"This afternoon, before I go to attend the Asean summit meeting, I will submit a royal decree seeking dissolution of the House of Representatives to the palace," he said.
He said that internal processes would take place after he submitted the royal decree.
"I will give a press conference again on Monday after returning home. I am also confident that dissolving the Parliament will make our country move forward," he added.
Abhisit is also confident that there will be no problem with the law in relation to the general election.
The Constitution Court is expected to give its ruling next Monday on whether the three election-related organic laws passed by Parliament recently complied with the March Constitution amendment.
The three organic laws pertain to the election of members of parliament (MPs), senators, political parties and the Election Commission.
The amendments of the three organic laws were made after Parliament passed amendments to Section 93 to 98 of the Constitution in March.
Under the amended Constitution, the new House of Representatives will consist of 375 single constituency MPs and 125 party list MPs compared with 400 MPs and 100 party list MPs before the amendment.
The current government's term expires in December this year.
