PM, Sonia, Chidamabaram pay last respects to Khandu

Itanagar, May 6 (PTI) Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister
P Chidambaram on Friday paid their last respects to former
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, who was killed
in a helicopter crash along with four others on April 30.
The Prime Minister, Gandhi and Chidambaram landed at
the Raj Bhavan helipad here in IAF helicopters and were
driven straight to the Nitin Vihar residence of Khandu.
They were at Khandu's residence for 20 minutes.
They had arrived at the Lilabari Airport in the
north-eastern state of Assam by a special flight from Delhi.
Prior to their arrival, thousands of people had
gathered near Khandu's official residence.
Khandu's body was found from the crash site at
Luguthang in Tawang district in the north-eastern state of
Arunachal Pradesh on May four, five days after his B3 single
engine, four-seater helicopter disappeared after being last
sighted at the Sela Pass.
The others killed were the helicopter pilots Capt
J S Babbar, Capt T S Mamik, Khandu's security officer Yeshi
Choddak and Yeshi Lhamu, sister of Tawant MLA Tsewang
Dhondup.
On Thursday, the bodies were airlifted to Tawang town
from where Khandu's body was brought here.


Sonia and Chidambaram spent a few minutes with the
family and conveyed their condolence to Khandu's second wife
Rinchin Drema and eldest son Pema Khandu.
Gandhi placed a 'khada' (white scarf) and stood for a
few moments in silence before the body which was in a glass
casket on a raised platform.Industrialist and MP Naveen
Jindal, who accompanied the leaders, also paid his respects.
After their departure, the body was flown to Tawang by
helicopter.
The last rites of Khandu will be performed in his home
village of Gyangkhar in Tawang district as per Monpa
traditions on May 11.
"This is a decision by the Lamas who only are
authorised to announce the time, date and day for the last
rite after studying the scriptures," Lok Sabha member Takam
Sanjoy, a close aide of Khandu, said.
The Lamas will perform prayers s as per Monpa customs
till May 10 for Khandu who was a devout Buddhist belonging to
the Gellupa sect, Sanjoy said.
Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin, all MLAs and the three
MPs from the state would attend the funeral, he said.
