Turkish minister: Laden was the reason people associate Islam and terrorism

ANKARA (A.A) - 06.05.2011 - Turkish State Minister & Chief Negotiator for EU talks Egemen Bagis has said that Osama bin Laden was the biggest reason people associated Islam with terrorism.
He was the first reason which caused people to associate terrorism with Islam which carries the meaning of peace, added Bagis who spoke at private Samanyolu Haber channel on Thursday.
Noting that he had been in New York during September 11 attack and he would never forget the expression on people's faces, Bagis said that September 11 attack caused a big trauma in the United States.
Also commenting on Turkey's EU membership process, Bagis said that more than 70 percent of Turkish people believed the EU process was for the interest of Turkey however a large part of the people did not think Turkey would be able to join the Union. 
Double standards of Europe and negative statements of European leaders caused a big disappointment on Turkish people, and they would no longer attach importance to this issue, added Bagis.
