TOUR & TRAVEL AGENTS FAIR TOLD TO FOCUS ON DOMESTIC TOURISM
PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Participants of the Malaysian Association of Tours and Travel Agents (Matta) exhibition beginning Friday have been urged to promote domestic tourism instead of foreign destinations.
Tourism Minister Azalina Othman Said said she had criticised Matta several
months ago for not focusing on domestic tourism and hoped it would do so at its
exhibition next year.
"If more Malaysians spend their holidays in the country instead of overseas
our economy will grow," she told reporters after opening the AIG Travel Assist
Help Centre at the SkyPark fixed-based operation at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah
Airport, Subang near here today.
Asked on the goods and services Tax (GST), she said the ministry hoped the
GST refund could be implemented soon for the benefit of tourists shopping in the
country.
"I think the GST refund will be quite exciting for tourists and the Cabinet
will decide on the date of its implementation," she said.
She said the Cabinet had no objection on a proposal that the opening hours
at shopping complexes be extended to midnight.
On tourist arrivals, she said Malaysia recorded a 12 per cent increase in
tourist arrivals, especially from Europe and the United States, in August
compared to 12.5 per cent the previous month.
