MUHYIDDIN TO ADDRESS TWO KEY FORUMS IN EUROPE
By Leslean Arshad
COPENHAGEN, May 7 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will
be the lead speaker at the plenary session of the Asia-Europe Meeting Conference
of Ministers of Education here on Monday.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, will speak on "Engaging Business
and Industry in Education".
The conference at Axelborg Hall gathers top policy and decision-makers from
Asia and Europe to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation and partnership in
education.
Malaysia's ambassador to Sweden, concurrently accredited to Denmark, Norway
and Iceland, Kamarudin Mustafa, said that participation in the ASEM Conference
of Ministers of Education provided the avenue for the country to explore
opportunities in education in Asia and Europe.
For example, he said, many European countries were very advanced in
technology which Malaysia could explore for its own benefit.
"We are at the same time promoting Malaysia as an education centre of
excellence and trying to attract more foreign students to Malaysia," Kamaruddin
said.
"Many of our students study overseas, but it has mostly been a one-way
traffic (between Malaysia and Europe). Few students from Denmark, for example,
come to our country," he added.
Kamarudin said that Muhyiddin, who is due to arrive in the Danish capital
on Sunday, was scheduled to address the Malaysian community at a dinner the same
day.
There are 157 Malaysians in Denmark who have registered with the embassy.
Apart from the students, Malaysians work in the country's oil and gas industry
and in engineering and shipping.
From Copenhagen, Muhyiddin will fly to the French capital of Paris to attend
the 186th executive board meeting of Unesco, the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
He will be a speaker at the plenary session on Tuesday.
Malaysia has been a member of Unesco since June 1958 and is a member of its
executive board which comprises 58 countries.
The biannual executive board meeting is Unesco's second highest forum after
its general assembly.
By tradition, the Education Minister represents Malaysia in the Unesco
executive board.
