Turkey's chief EU negotiator releases message to mark Europe Day
ANKARA (A.A) - 08.05.2011 - The Turkish chief negotiator for talks with the European Union (EU) said on Sunday that difficulties would never discourage Turkey in its EU process.
In a message he released on the occasion of May 9, Europe Day, Turkish State Minister & Chief Negotiator for EU Talks Egemen Bagis said that Turkey's EU project constituted one of the most important steps carrying the country to the level of modern civilizations, a goal set by founder of the Republic, Ataturk.
Pointing to the remarkable progress achieved in Turkey's EU process in the last 9 years, Bagis said the country preserved its determination for membership just like the very first day.
The negotiator also noted that some EU member states, acting with political concerns, raised obstacles on Turkey's road to EU despite the country's efforts.
"These difficulties may weaken our enthusiasm, however, they can never intimidate us," he said.
Describing Turkey's EU adhesion as a "win-win" relationship, Bagis also said such process would make Turkey more democratic, prosperous and stronger.
-EUROPE DAY-
On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.
This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.
Today, the 9th of May has become a European symbol (Europe Day) which, along with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency (the euro), identifies the political entity of the EU.
