GOVT WILLING TO SEND, TRAIN MALAY LANGUAGE TEACHERS ABROAD

From Leslean Arshad

COPENHAGEN, May 9 (Bernama) -- The government is willing to consider sending and training teachers to teach the Malay language to Malaysian children abroad, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.

Responding to a question at a dinner with the Malaysian community here on Sunday if the government could help organise Malay language classes for Malaysian children abroad, Muhyiddin said it could be worked out since there was a request for it.

"Whether we can send teachers here, or you send somebody from here so that we can train them to teach the language when they return, is something we can work out," he said.

Muhyiddin, who is the Education Minister, however, said that Malaysians abroad could also conduct Malay language classes or tuitions, saying that Malay was not a difficult language to learn.

Malay language books and syllabus could be sent here to facilitate teaching, he said.

He said studies would be conducted to identify the number of Malaysian children abroad who need to study the language and the cost involved.

Earlier in his speech, Muhyiddin urged Malaysians to continue strengthening their command of the national language irrespective of where they are.

He said that the Danish people, for instance, gave priority to their language although many of them had a good command of English.

Muhyiddin also spoke about the development back home, particularly the progress achieved in the implementation of government policies such as the Government Transformation Programme, Economic Transformation Programme and the initiative to bring back Malaysian professionals abroad.

Muhyiddin also told the gathering, attended by about 100 Malaysians, that cabinet ministers had done well in achieving their Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

The evaluation of the ministers' KPIs were done and endorsed by
international experts, he said.

"It's not 'political reporting' by the government; it has been endorsed and certified by international experts. We have performed very well so far," he said.

To a question, Muhyiddin said the new healthy food guideline in school was being finalised.

He said however that obesity problem among students was not only due to the food provided in school canteen but also the food they take outside.
